Pension withdrawal strategies

When you take the money out matters as much as how much you saved. The withdrawal period affects tax, risk level and how long the money lasts. Here are the main approaches, the most common trap and a simple simulation.

Common pitfalls

The income gap (the 'pension trap')

Taking occupational pensions over five years gives high income early and a steep drop when they end. The Swedish Pensions Agency warns specifically about this gap — plan for your income across your whole retirement.

The tax effect of short withdrawals

A short withdrawal can push annual income above the state income tax threshold, while a longer one often stays in a lower bracket. The difference in what you keep can be substantial.

Survivor protection in the wrong order

minPension stresses finding out which policies include survivor protection — and generally withdrawing unprotected money first so the protection lasts longer.

Wrong risk level for the period

The Swedish Consumers' Insurance Bureau notes that risk must match the withdrawal period. Over five years risk should be reduced sharply; for lifelong withdrawals a significant share can remain in global equity funds.

Checklist before you start withdrawing

  • Log in to minPension and compile all your pensions before choosing a withdrawal period.
  • Check which policies include survivor protection and in which order they should be drawn.
  • Compare total tax over 5, 10 and 20 years — not just the first year's amount.
  • Match the risk level to the withdrawal period and review fund fees in good time.
  • Consider how the withdrawal interacts with continued work, housing supplement and other benefits.
